About Brew Lab

Why we built a separate brewing guide section.

The Jurassic Magic Journal is where we write about coffee culture, Los Angeles, and things that hurt. The Brew Lab is where we get practical. Two different jobs. Two different sections.

Quick Reference

Which brewing method is right for you?

You want the best possible cup: Pour over or V60. You want it fast: AeroPress (2 min). You want low-acid coffee: Cold brew. You want something easy: Clever Dripper or French press. You want to impress people: Siphon.

Common Questions
What’s the most important variable in any brew method?
+

Freshness of coffee. Roasted within 2–4 weeks, ground immediately before brewing. Everything else is secondary to starting with good, fresh coffee.

Do I need a scale to brew good coffee?
+

Yes. Coffee is a ratio game and volumetric measuring is inconsistent. A $12 kitchen scale will immediately improve your consistency more than any equipment upgrade.

What’s the best coffee brewing method for beginners?
+

French press or Clever Dripper. Both are forgiving, require minimal technique, and produce excellent results with basic equipment.

Why does my coffee taste different every day when I use the same method?
+

Inconsistent grind size is the most common culprit. A burr grinder produces uniform particles; a blade grinder does not. Upgrade the grinder before anything else.
